Bunions Q & A

What are bunions?

Bunions are abnormal enlargements of the joint (the inner part) at the base of your big toe. This is caused by the misalignment of the big toe joint or bone formation.

Because of the misalignment, your toe starts to point outward and orient itself toward your smaller toes. Although symptoms may or may not be present at first, the bunion can become inflamed and eventually cause pain, tenderness, and redness in your feet.

Bunions can occur in the pinky toe, although these are less common. Also known as a tailor's bunion, it causes the pinky toe to point in toward the other toes; effectively, these are the opposite of big toe bunions.

What causes bunions?

The exact causes of bunions are not yet known, however, some factors contribute to their development, but they're often caused by abnormal foot functioning.

Abnormal foot function can include any of the following:

  • Overpronation
  • Abnormal metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint
  • Genetics

Other causes include:

  • Trauma: sprains and fractures
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Leg length discrepancies
  • Gout
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • High heels or other ill-fitting shoes

If your feet are affected by abnormal foot function, you may be more likely to develop bunions.

What are the symptoms of bunions?

In the beginning, bunions may not cause any symptoms other than pain when you walk.

However, over time, you might start exhibiting more severe symptoms, especially if you have arthritis. These symptoms might include:

  • Bulging bump on the outside of your big toe
  • Restricted movement of the big toe
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Soreness

You might also notice blisters and calluses in the affected area due to the friction and pressure caused by your shoes.

It's important not to confuse gout with bunions as they can cause similar symptoms, like pain at the base of your big toe.

How are bunions treated?

The team at VP Foot & Ankle Specialist provides expert care in treating bunions, from simple repairs to complex reconstructions.

It's important to note that not all bunions require surgery. Your doctor might recommend conservative treatments that might include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Cold-pack applications
  • More appropriate shoes
  • Bunion pads for closed shoes
  • Splints
  • Stretches
  • Custom orthotics
