Warts are a result of a virus infecting the deeper layers of the skin which results in signficant pain. Callus will often build up in the area of the wart as there is excessive irritation. Warts can be mistaken for corns and calluses.


There are a variety of treatment options which include freezing, elecrical burning, chemical, and injection therapy. Surgical excision of warts, though rare, may be necessary when other tretment fail.

Over the counter treatments, especially acids, should be avoided. When used incorrectly significant trauma to the tissue can occur resulting in deep wounds and risk for infection.

Any lesions that suddenly present on the foot should be evaluated by a podiatric physician as other lesions such as carcinomas and melenomas can present on the foot.
